So much can be said about how powerful email marketing is for start up and small businesses. One of which is that it provides a direct path towards customers – old and potential ones. That’s why list building is a cornerstone of email marketing. No matter how great your email campaign is it won’t be of use if you don’t have anyone to send them to. How to build a list? The passive approach is to put up a sign-up form on your web site. Here are tips on a more aggressive approach:

Attending events is one of the best ways to build your list. Face to face encounters with potential subscribers make it easier for you to connect with customers and pitch your products or services. You’ll be surprised as to how many people are willing to give out their email addresses for nothing. So don’t forget to print out sign up sheets when you attend events.

Social media

Your social media pages already have a mixture of people you know and people you hardly know. Consider them a mine field of potential email subscribers by placing a web form on all of your accounts. This way, you can grow your email list through your online following.

Sample newsletter

There are people who would subscribe to your newsletter without even seeing your newsletter. But there are those that would want to see what you’re offering first before subscribing. So why not give them a preview or a sample of what they’ll be getting once they subscribe? Put up a link of your sample newsletter either on your web form or a separate sign up page.
